Patriarchy – social organization marked by the supremacy of the father in the clan or family, the legal dependence of wives and children, and the reckoning of descent and inheritance in the male line; broadly : control by men of a disproportionately large share of power
People of color (sometimes abbreviated POC) – a term used primarily in the United States to describe any person who is not white. The term encompasses all non-white groups, emphasizing common experiences of racism.
Privilege – A group of unearned cultural, legal, social, and institutional rights extended to a group based on their social group membership. Individuals with privilege are considered to be the normative group, leaving those without access to this privilege invisible, unnatural, deviant, or just plain wrong. Most of the time, these privileges are automatic and most individuals in the privileged group are unaware of them. Some people who can “pass” as members of the privileged group might have access to some levels of privilege (J. Beal 2009).
Microaggression – the everyday verbal, nonverbal, and environmental slights, snubs, or insults, whether intentional or unintentional, which communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative messages to target persons based solely upon their marginalized group membership.
Ally – A person of one social identity group who stands up in support of members of another group; typically a member of a dominant group standing beside member(s) of a group being discriminated against or treated unjustly
Oppression – Institutional Oppression occurs when established laws, customs, and practices systematically reflect and produce inequities based on one’s membership in targeted social identity groups.
Marginalize – to put or keep (someone) in a powerless or unimportant position within a society or group
LGBTQ – Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning
Capitalism – A system of economics based on the private ownership of capital and production inputs, and on the production of goods and services for profit.
White Supremacy – White Supremacy is an historically based, institutionally perpetuated system of exploitation and oppression of continents, nations, and peoples of color by white peoples and nations of the European continent, for the purpose of maintaining and defending a system of wealth, power, and privilege.
Matriarchy – Matriarchy is a social system in which females hold primary power, predominate in roles of political leadership, moral authority, social privilege and control of property.
All-Inclusive Matriarchy –Matriarchy in which POC and whites hold equal power. Multicultural system of government by women.
